Wondering where to go for Spring Break?
Knott’s Berry Farm is having a fun #BoysenberryFestival from April 1st – 23rd! This three week festival is all about the berry that originated in Buena Park, California. The festival features over 70 one-of-a-kind boysenberry inspired dishes, drinks and more, plus food-stompin’ entertainment! I went on Saturday, April 1st and had a BLAST! If you are added on my Instagram, you probably saw my snaps. I am dedicating this post to share with you all my amazing experience at the #BoysenberryFestival, so you can go too!!
What is a Boysenberry?
A boysenberry is a purple berry that is created by a cross of a loganberry, red raspberry and blackberry. The boysenberry is named after its originator, Rudolph Boysen. Today, all the boysenberries in the world trace their roots back to Knotts Berry Farm!! Cool or what?! If you want to learn more about Knott’s Berry Farm’s history, you should check out the event at the Calico Town Hall at the Festival! 🙂
What foods & activities are included in this festival?
The #BoysenBerryFestival is included with the admission ticket to Knott’s Berry Farm because it takes place in the theme park itself! There are additional costs for food tasting experiences within the event along with a full day of thrilling coasters and family fun rides.
My friends and I had some cheese pizza and chicken strips with fries for lunch before trying the food on the Tasting Card!
You have the choice of purchasing a “Tasting Card” for $25 to try 6 different Boysenberry foods. I tried #2, 3, 4, and 5! It was fun to walk around the park and find the places that are listed on the Tasting Card. Each food station was numbered to match the card so people know where they can go to try the Boysenberry foods! You are not required to purchase the Tasting Card to participate in the Boysenberry Festival. You can purchase each of the foods on the Tasting Card separately if you are not interested in trying all 6.
Out of the four I tried, I liked #2 the most because it was warm and it tasted like a churro bread with boysenberry filling inside… Yum!!! (photo below)
I also loved #5: The Boysenberry Panna Cotta. It is made of a boysenberry flavored cream with some boysenberry jam flavoring on top sprinkled with nuts and whip cream! (photos below)
There are so many other great food options around the park. Some other foods you can try are: alligator bites paired with farm-made zesty boysenberry aioli, sweet boysenberry cream soda, creamy chocolate covered boysenberry cheesecake on a stick and many more delicious treats. I recommend trying Funnel Cakes at Knott’s too if you go because they are DELICIOUS! Every time I go, I always buy a funnel cake hehe. There are 10 special events/activities that you can see while at the festival. I went to:
1. Livery Stable
2. History of Boysenberry & Knott’s Berry Farm
3. Calico Park Fun, Music, & Games
4. Old Cage Melodrama
5. Snoopy’s Boysenberry Jamboree
6. 80’s Dance Party
(photo of events list below)
I was not able to attend all because my friends and I went on some rides. It was hot on Saturday and the ride lines were long, so it took up some of our time from being able to attend all the events. However, it is possible to see all the events if you time it properly and stay at the park from opening to close. Knott’s Berry Farm has extended their hours from 10am – 10pm so you can enjoy the festival for the whole day!
From the six of ten activities I attended, I truly enjoyed the Livery Stable, learning about the history of the Boysenberry and Knott’s Berry Farm, and the 80’s dance party the most!! I recommend going to all the events if possible to maximize your day and to enjoy with your loved ones. 🙂
Wine & Craft Brew Tasting
If you love wine, be sure to check out the Wine & Craft Brew Garden at Ghost Town’s Wilderness Dance Hall. They offer 4 craft brews and over 50 different wines from 36 producers including boysenberry beer and wine! For more information click HERE.
Be sure to keep in mind of the weather and day that you plan on attending the festival. Bring or apply sunblock if you know that it will be hot the day you go so you don’t get sunburned! I would also recommend bringing hats to beat the heat. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes so you won’t get tired or uncomfortable throughout the day at Knott’s. You can rent a locker if you want to keep your personal belongings safe. I rented a locker because I was there the whole day and wanted to keep my camera and jackets in there before going on the rides. Bring jackets if needed because it can get chilly after 7pm. I brought a pair of shoes along with sandals in case I wanted to change. I wore a thin yet comfortable spring top with hemmed jeans. I brought along a small purse to take with me while attending activities and going on rides. I kept my bigger purse with other belongings in the locker.
#BoysenberryFestival Decor & Shops
As I was walking around the theme park, I was so fascinated by how wonderfully Knott’s Berry Farm was decorated for the celebration of their 23 days of the #BoysenberryFestival. There are a lot of purple colored decor to go with the theme color of the boysenberry. There are also very vibrant flowers, ribbons, and flower crowns in the shops which marks the beautiful season of spring! I saw some really cool boysenberry chapsticks, mugs, and cakes in the shops as well that you can purchase.
I had a BERRY great time at the opening day of the #BoysenberryFestival on Saturday, April 1st! Thank you so much to Knott’s Berry Farm for inviting me to such a fun festival!
I definitely plan to go next year again. If you are on Spring Break, you should attend too!
